How to Incorporate the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year in Your Home

Creativity & Design

Pantone recently announced their 2018 Color of the Year, and it is…Ultra Violet!

According to Pantone’s website, Ultra Violet is “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade…communicating originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.”

In keeping with the latest trends, designers often incorporate the Color of the Year in their work. This year, you might see this vibrant color on everything from walls, furnishings and appliances to clothing, cars and packaging.

In home interiors, Ultra Violet can add spice and brightness to make a bold, defined statement, and to call attention to certain areas of a room.

If you’re looking to incorporate ultra violet – the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year – into your home, here are a few tips and tricks to follow.

Flower Power

Since so many flowers naturally come in shades of violet, it’s an easy way to incorporate the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year in your home. And in the spring and summer months, you can even grow your own in the garden! Varieties such as purple lilacs, pansies, irises and, of course, violets, will beautifully brighten up any room of the house, and establish a more defined focal point.

Update Your Décor

Since the Pantone Color of the Year is, obviously, an annual occurrence, it might not make sense to repaint your walls – unless, of course, you’re in love with the color. Instead, you can make small changes to your home, such as updating the décor.

For the living room, you can bring in Ultra Violet throw blankets, plush pillows, rugs, or even a bold piece of furniture. For the kitchen, consider Ultra Violet stemware, coasters, and wall art. For the bathroom, towels and candles. For the bedroom, a bright Ultra Violet headboard, comforter or sheets can really make the space pop.

Accentuate!

If you don’t wish to make ultra violet the dominant color of your room, consider using it to accentuate the space. A single piece of ultra violet furniture – such as a sofa or agate table – will create a visual anchor that gives more personality to the room.

You can also pair ultra violet well with many jewel tones, such as ruby and emerald green, to create more visual interest in an otherwise neutral room. And in paint, using ultra violet trim can really make walls or cabinets pop!

Find the Right Balance

When creating a space, it’s important to find the right balance of color to achieve your desired atmosphere – be it classy and sophisticated or bold and creative.

To that end, you should make use of the 60-30-10 rule, which states that your dominant color should make up 60% of the space (walls, rugs, and accent pieces), your secondary color should make up 30% of the space (furniture, curtains, and trim), and your accent color should make up 10% of the space (small décor pieces)

If you wish to incorporate ultra violet in your room, think about whether you want it as a dominant, secondary or accent color, and decorate accordingly.
