Ann Arbor is pedestrian and bike-friendly, with 475 miles of sidewalks and it is home to over 150 parks. Residents and visitors have plenty of options for outdoor activities, relaxation, and recreation. In fact, Ann Arbor has earned the name “Tree Town” because of its reputation as an outdoor urban oasis!
The Huron River winds through Ann Arbor and neighboring cities, and it offers a favorite spot for all kinds of recreation. The Huron River Trail is a 104-mile inland padding trail that follows the river. Throughout Ann Arbor, and other towns that the river passes through, there are plenty of opportunities to kayak, canoe, fish, or other freshwater pursuits.
One of the city’s most popular parks, Gallup Park offers 69 acres of scenic beauty along the Huron River. Here you can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and miles of walking and biking trails. There are two playgrounds, picnic areas and grills scattered throughout the park, as well as picnic shelters, and over 3 miles of asphalt trails that can be used for biking, walking, running, or rollerblading. Gallup Park is an ideal spot for family picnics or a peaceful afternoon by the water.
Part of the University of Michigan, Matthaei Botanical Gardens has nearly 3 miles of trails, unique, outdoor gardens, and an indoor conservatory. You can also find the Gaffield Children’s Garden within the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, as well as other youth educational programs hosted throughout the parks. The gardens can be found at 1600 Washington Heights, and admission is free.
Affectionately known as “The Arb” by locals, Nichols Arboretum offers over 120 acres of breathtaking landscapes, including forests, prairies, and gardens. It’s a go-to destination for nature enthusiasts and offers year-round beauty, whether you’re taking a springtime stroll or a winter hike. There are many trails throughout The Arb, but they are unpaved.

Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) is the primary district serving the city of Ann Arbor, known for its strong academic programs, diversity, and extracurricular activities. Established in 1971 as a blues venue, The Blind Pig is a legendary music venue that has hosted countless bands over the years. Located at 208 S. 1st Street, legendary musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Iggy Pop, and Ted Nugent have all played at The Blind Pig. Bands such as Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana have also all played here. Now, local talent mixes with larger acts and gives visitors a mix of musical variety! Another local concert venue, The Ark is Michigan’s nonprofit home to folk and roots music. It’s an intimate club, with only 400 seats, and presents performers ranging from up-and-comers to classic folk and roots musicians. It’s located at 316 S. Also known as the UMMA, the University of Michigan Museum of Art is located at 525 S. State Street. Belonging to the University of Michigan, this museum houses magnificent pieces of art, and is also a unique venue for events. For families, a day spent at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is a great way to inspire children to discover the wonders of STEaM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Part of Zingerman’s Community of Business, Miss Kim is a Korean restaurant that opened in 2016. Chef Ji Hye Kim grew up in South Korea and brought these authentic and flavorful dishes to Ann Arbor. However, the restaurant uses local Michigan farmers to fulfill its offerings. Miss Kim’s street address is 415 North 5th Avenue, but the entrance is closer to Kingsley.
