3 Years of Balding Excellence – Lombardo Homes Team Members Shave Heads for Childhood Cancer

News & Announcements

We’re shaving our heads – again!

For the third year in a row, members from the Lombardo Homes Michigan team are participating in the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser, an event that raises money for childhood cancer research. Team Lombaldy – made up of volunteers from our Michigan office, construction, property management, and custom homes teams – is raising money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation by shaving their heads on Saturday, March 11, at the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser event in Romeo, Mich.

This is Team Lombaldy’s third year participating in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser. Our team has been the top fundraising team at the Romeo event for the past two years, raising more than $61,000 in 2016, and $45,000 in 2015.

Over 1,700 supporters – including more than 500 women – have already registered to shave their heads 400+ events this year, according to the St. Baldrick’s website. For the first time, Team Lombaldy has two women shavees: Gina Bastian from our property management division, and her daughter, Heidie.

“I have four children, and three of them have been affected by losing friends to cancer in middle and high school,” Gina said. “Heidie and I want to support Team Lombaldy and the cause by shaving our heads this year. Both of us are elated by the amount of positive support we have received from so many people, which makes it even more fun!”

Why childhood cancer research? Childhood cancer is a big problem worldwide and close to home. On a global scale, one child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, which means 1-2 children will be diagnosed by the time you finish reading this blog post. In the United States, childhood cancer is the leading disease killer of children.

However, childhood cancer research remains underfunded – in 2011, childhood cancer only received 3.7% of the National Cancer Institute’s $5.196 billion budget. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is “committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives,” and is the world’s largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.

This year, Team Lombaldy is aiming to raise $45,000 for St. Baldrick’s. Want to get involved? Check out our team page and make a donation, whether it be to our entire team or an individual shavee. Then, head to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising event at Main Street in downtown Romeo on Saturday, March 11 to support our team members as they shave their heads for those fighting childhood cancer.
