Home decorating DIY: Three Easy DIY Gift Ideas

Moving into a new home is exciting for many reasons—you’re in a brand new space, you have new neighbors to meet, and you have an excuse to try new decorating projects. These three easy DIY gift idea projects can be used in your own home or given to a neighbor as a housewarming gift. Let us know if you try one and how it turns out!

PROJECT 1: DIY Yard-Wrapped Painted Jars from The Forge

This project was the most labor intensive of the three, and still only took 30 minutes (minus drying time).

What you need:

1. Two clean jars
2. String
3. Spray paint
4. Hot glue gun (optional)
5. Rope (optional)

How to make it:

1. Wrap string around each jar, tying tightly with a knot.
2. Place the jars upside-down on a covered surface (preferably outside) and spray evenly with 2-3 coats of paint. Give the paint 5-10 minutes to try between each coat.
3. Once the paint is fully dry, cut the strong and unwrap from the jar. (Tip: Cut in an area where the string overlaps so you don’t scratch off any of the paint.)
4. Add some tea lights and, voila, you’re done. I used a hot glue gun to attach rope around the rim, as well, giving it a little more character.

PROJECT 2: 1 Minute DIY Chalkboard Mason Jar from We Heart Parties

I loved this project because it was so versatile. You can use the jar as a vase, supply holder, or a centerpiece on the coffee table. The chalkboard paint allows you to change the message on the jar based on the season or purpose.

 What you need:

1. One clean jar
2. Chalkboard spray paint (We Heart Parties used black chalkboard paint, but I chose green)
3. Chalk marker
4. Rope/twine
5. Hot glue gun

How to make it:

1. Place the jar upside-down on a covered surface (again, outside is best) and spray evenly with 2-3 coats of paint. Give the paint 5-10 minutes to try between each coat.
2. Once the paint is fully dried, use a hot glue gun to attach rope around the rim, tying in a bow in the front of the jar.
3. Use the chalkboard pen to write your message.

PROJECT 3: Inspired by DIY Mini Gardens from The 36th Avenue

Originally, I had planned to make my own jar vase for this project. When I went to the store to pick up a succulent, though, I fell in love with the vase it was already in. Instead, I modified the project so I could keep the vase but still add a personal touch.

What you need:

1. One potted plant. I used a succulent because they’re pretty low-maintenance, but any flower or plant will work. If you don’t have a vase you like, use the chalkboard jar from Project 2.
2. Rope/twine
3. Gift tag (one that is large enough to write a message)
4. Hot glue gun

How to make it:

1. Use a glue gun to attach the rope to the rim of the vase.
2. Before you tie the rope in a knot, loop the rope through the gift tag. (Remember to write your message first.)
3. Tie the rope in a knot or bow and secure the knot/bow to the vase with glue.
