As summer fades and the air turns crisp, it’s clear that fall has arrived, and Halloween is just around the corner! Across the country, homeowners are once again getting into the festive spirit, ready to transform their spaces with seasonal décor. From simple pumpkin displays to extravagant haunted house setups, there are countless ways to prepare for those trick-or-treaters.
At Lombardo Homes, we know that home is where memories are made, no matter the season. This year, we set out to explore which states go all out for Halloween and which decorations are most popular across the country. We analyzed Google trends on Halloween décor to uncover each state’s top decoration choices. Additionally, we surveyed over 1,200 Americans to discover when they start decorating and how much they plan to spend on their spooky setups this year.
Once again, Utah tops the states nationwide for decorating the most in 2024! Utah’s favorite decoration remains a spooky spider. A spider decoration is also a favorite in Montana.
In 2024, New Hampshire ranks second and is followed by Vermont, West Virginia, and Delaware. Top decorations in these states are the Grim Reaper, scarecrows, and zombies.
While most states are close to their 2023 rank, the Halloween spirit has left in the last year. In 2023, Alabama ranked 37th, but in 2024 Alabamans will be decorating even less and rank 50th. However, pumpkins are still the top type of Halloween decor!
Other popular Halloween decorations in 2024 include bats, black cats, creepy clowns, crows, ghosts, skeletons, witches and tombstones. Rhode Island stands out at number 7, and is the only state where a werewolf is the top Halloween decoration!
Top 10 Decorations in the U.S.:
There’s been a shift in the most popular decor across the country. In 2024, skeletons have topped pumpkins when it comes to the top Halloween decoration! Pumpkins still rank second, and whether you decorate with skeletons or pumpkins in your home, both are sure to bring the holiday spirit to your season!
Other decorations in the top ten this year include tombstones, spiders, crows, bats, witches, black cats and ghosts! Although no state’s top decoration this year is a vampire, nationwide, vampires rank in the top 10.
While we know which states will decorate the most for Halloween in 2024, what about major cities? We analyzed Google Trends to find out which cities will be decorating the most and the top decoration in that city.
Denver remains the reigning champ in 2024, taking the top spot once again. But unlike in 2023, the city’s top decoration is now pumpkins. Pumpkins are also the top decoration in Portland, Dallas and San Diego. Seattle comes in at number two and citizens there like to decorate with black cats, similar to Oklahoma City and Los Angeles. Rounding out the top five cities that decorate the most are Las Vegas, Nashville, and Portland.
Taking last place in the 2024 rankings is Louisville, where creepy clowns dominate the decor. Clowns are also out to scare in Charlotte and El Paso. The other cities that don’t decorate as much include New York City, Los Angeles, Memphis, and Philadelphia.
Americans are even more excited for Halloween in 2024 than they were in 2023, with 82% of Americans saying they’ll decorate for the holiday this year. One tradition that continues is carving pumpkins, and 56% will be carving pumpkins in 2024.
When Americans decorate their homes really comes down to the homeowner. More than 1 in 5 decorate before October 1, with the majority (34%) decorating the first week of October. However, the decor will be going up all month long, with 15% decorating October 8th – 15th, 14% decorating October 16th – 23rd and 15% will wait till the end of the month and set up decorations October 24th- 31st.
In 2024, the spending on Halloween decor has increased to $131, up from $87 in 2023. Those extra expenses may result in more decorations, which is why Americans will be spending about 4 hours decorating, up from 3 hours in 2023.
Spooky reigns supreme when it comes to the type of Halloween decorations Americans prefer, with 50% liking spooky and 47% preferring fun Halloween decor. Only 4% prefer the gore.

In September 2024 we analyzed 7,161 Google search terms related to Halloween decorations and buying themed decor to complete this study. We looked at search volume per capita averages over the past 12 months for state and city-level data.
In September 2024, we surveyed 1,203 Americans for their feedback on Halloween decorating and typical holiday decorations. Respondents were 49% female, 49% male and 2% nonbinary with an age range of 18 to 76 and an average age of 40.
